From Tuesday, April 7, all trips on Route 26 will operate as a pre-order service. The route and timetable remain unchanged; however, all trips must be booked by calling Hreyfill at +354 588 5522 at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time according to the timetable.

Strætó’s sustainability report for 2025 has been published and was presented at the company’s annual meeting, held on Thursday, 26 March. The report contains a wide range of information on Strætó’s operations, including fleet status, services within the route network, technological innovations, and greenhouse gas emissions. The report was prepared with reference to the international GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) standard.
At the annual meeting, Alexandra Briem, Chair of the Board, presented the board’s report, and Elísa Kristmannsdóttir, head of finance, presented the company’s financial statements. Finally, Jóhannes Rúnarsson, CEO of Strætó, outlined the company’s key priorities in sustainability and environmental matters.

A new timetable will take effect on Route 19 this coming Sunday, 29 March. Departure times will change, while the route itself remains the same. Service frequency will also remain unchanged: every 15 minutes during peak hours on weekdays and every 30 minutes outside peak hours and during weekends.

The installation of NaviLens codes at Strætó bus stops has begun, with the first routes 13 and 14—already accessible to blind and visually impaired passengers.
Using NaviLens codes, blind and visually impaired users can independently access information on routes and arrival times without assistance. Through a mobile app, real-time travel information is read aloud, enabling fully independent use. The solution also benefits other passengers, including tourists and people whose first language is not Icelandic.
The project is a collaboration between Strætó and the Icelandic Association of the Visually Impaired, marking a significant step forward in accessibility in public transport. Strætó leads the project and owns and is responsible for the codes, while the Association received government grants from the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Market and the Minister of Infrastructure for the initial implementation.
The City of Reykjavík has supported the project from the beginning, both in planning and execution, with city staff handling the installation of codes on shelters and poles. Síminn/Billboard has also provided invaluable support by installing codes on all shelters under its management.
In the coming months, installation will expand to additional routes and stops, both in Reykjavík and later in other municipalities.

NaviLens codes function similarly to QR codes but offer several advantages:

<li>They can be detected from up to 12 times greater distances than QR codes.</li>
<li>They work in low-light conditions and require less precise camera alignment.</li>
<li>They provide information about stop locations, routes serving the stop, and real-time arrival of the next bus.</li>
</ul>

Who benefits from the solution?

<li>Blind and visually impaired users can independently access route and arrival information without relying on others.</li>
<li>Sighted users can use the NaviLens GO app to access the same real-time information easily.</li>
<li>Tourists and non-Icelandic speakers receive information automatically in their device language. The app supports over 33 languages.</li>
<li>People with reading difficulties, such as dyslexia, can benefit from audio playback of information within the app.</li>

Strætó's schedule over Easter 2026

Strætó services around Smáralind will operate with temporary changes due to Laufey Concerts taking place this weekend at Kórinn.
Because of special bus services transporting concert guests from Smáralind before the concerts, the bus stop on the south side of Smáralind (shopping mall side) will be closed for regular route services.

Impact on bus routes

Bus services in Kórahverfi

Bus services in Kórahverfi will remain unchanged despite temporary road closures, as buses will be allowed through the closures. However, minor delays may occur.
Routes 2 and 28 will therefore continue to operate as usual in the area and will stop at their regular bus stops in the neighbourhood.

Strætó services during Laufey’s concerts

A new update for the Klapp app was released late last week. It is intended to prevent Android users from experiencing an issue where the phone’s wallet override the QR code in the app and processes a contactless payment instead. A small number of users had encountered this.
With the update, NFC on the phone will automatically be turned off when the app is open, meaning contactless payments cannot be made while the app is in use.
Customers are therefore encouraged to update the app. It is also important to keep the app regularly updated to ensure that the latest updates and fixes are always in place.

New update in Klapp for Android users

We would like to draw the attention of customers who use a period pass or ticket in the Klapp app to a situation some Android users have experienced. In certain cases, the phone’s wallet overrides the QR code in the app when the phone is held up to the scanner, resulting in a single ticket being charged via contactless payment.
The QR code in the app must always be opened before boarding the bus. When the QR code is opened, the phone screen locks automatically.
On some Android devices, however, the screen does not appear to lock as intended. In those cases, the phone’s wallet may take over and charge the payment card contactlessly instead of scanning the QR code. A solution is currently being developed.
What can be done in the meantime?
Customers using Android phones can:
<ul>
<li>Turn off NFC on their phone before scanning the QR code.</li>
<li>Transfer their period pass or ticket to a Klapp card or Klapp key chain.</li>
</ul>
Please note that this issue does not apply to iPhones, only to certain Android devices.

We also remind customers to update the Klapp app regularly to ensure the latest updates and fixes are installed.

The changes will take effect on Sunday, 1 March. These are minor changes to departure times, but the number of trips remains the same.

Timetable Changes in the Countryside 1 March 2026

On Sunday, 1 March, changes will take effect in the Strætó route network in the capital area. Timetables on routes 13, 14, 15 and 19 will be adjusted to improve reliability and thereby increase punctuality. A new bus stop will also be added at Perlan on route 18 to improve passenger access. Routes 35 and 36 will operate closer to Sky Lagoon, making access easier for passengers as well as for those living and working at Bakkabraut. A new stop at Bakkabraut will also be introduced.
These changes are part of Strætó’s ongoing efforts to enhance its services and follow last summer’s service expansion, which was very well received. Strætó continuously reviews ways to improve its services and will continue making timetable adjustments.

Improving Punctuality and Accessibility – Route Changes from 1 March 2026

Route 93 will run an extra trip on Wednesday in line with Smyril Line´s sailings.
The Wednesday trips will be from March 18th to May 27th.

On June 4, the arrangement will change so that the Smyril Line will sail on Thursdays, and then the additional trips will change accordingly until September 3. From September 9 to November 19, the extra trips will then move back to Wednesdays.

The National Museum of Iceland and Strætó have joined forces to celebrate the milestone of Icelandic swimming culture being inscribed on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As a living tradition, swimming culture has now received international recognition as a distinctive element of Icelandic society and culture.
To mark the occasion, the Swimming Bus has been launched and will operate on Route 1 over the coming weeks. The bus will be on display at the National Museum at the start of Safnanótt (Museum Night), where a pool-themed celebration will take place in the museum at 5:00 PM. Addresses will be given by Harpa Þórsdóttir, Director General of the National Museum of Iceland; Logi Einarsson, Minister of Culture; and Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, former President of Iceland and a long-time supporter of Icelandic swimming culture.
The programme will also include short presentations related to the nation’s swimming culture, a swimming pool cinema in collaboration with the National Film Archive of Iceland, and performances by Linus Orri Gunnarsson Cederborg, representative of old traditions in Icelandic folk poetry, and Erpur Eyvindarson, representative of new nuances. Together, they will entertain guests with a timeless blend of rímur (narrative poetry) and modern flair.

Strætó and the National Museum Celebrate Swimming Culture

As of 1 February, Route 55 will operate via Ásbrú on the first morning trip from Reykjanesbær to the Capital Area.
The trip affected is the weekday trip departing from Keflavík International Airport at 6:27 a.m. The bus will stop at Grænásbraut at 6:44 a.m. according to the new timetable. Minor adjustments will also be made to the timetable, only on this first trip.

Changes to Route 55

Several changes will be made to Route 26 as of 7 January, the route is through Hellnahraun in Hafnarfjörður. The timetable will be changed and it will no longer be neccesary to re-order the first morning trips or the last trips of the day.  You still need to pre-order trips from Ásvallalaug at 8:32, 9:02, 14:50 and 15:20. The route will also be changed.
This new arrangement will be tested until 1 April.

Changes to Route 26

A new price list will take effect on January 6th, 2026. The increase is 3% for single fares and 3.6% for period passes. 
The single fare will rise from 670 kr. to 690 kr. and the 30 day passes for students, youth and seniors will increase from 5.600 kr. to 5.800 kr. 
The price of Klapp plastic cards remains unchanged at 1.000 kr.
The decision to change fares was made by the board of Strætó at its meeting on October 10th, in line with the projected consumer price index increase for the year. Strætó&#8217;s price list is reviewed twice a year, but the last time the fare was increased was on January 8th, 2025.
These fare changes apply to Strætó services in the capital area, while fares in the countryside remain unchanged. 
The new price list will take effect on Tuesday, January 6th, 2026.

From January 1, 2026, it will not be possible to use fares between the Klapp payment system in the capital area and Vegagerðin payment system, which owns and operates buses in the countryside. This means that a fare paid in one system cannot be used to pay for travel in the other.
<ul>
<li>Strætó bs. operates public transport in the capital area and uses the Klapp payment system.</li>
<li>Vegagerðin (IRCA) owns and operates the provincial buses and has its own payment system. Strætó provides certain information and services for passengers. Passengers pay their fare on board the buses with cash, credit card or a rural bus card.</li>
</ul>
We advise passengers to familiarize themselves with the fare terms and payment arrangements. This change is made to clarify the implementation and ensure a clear separation of the payment systems according to current rules.

Reykjanesbær has decided to increase its winter service on local buses from 2 January 2026. The aim is to improve the service and respond to <a href="https://www.straeto.is/en/user-information/news/changed-route-system-in-the-countryside">changes</a> that Vegagerðin is implementing on the route system in rural areas after the New Year.

Increased service on local buses in Reykjanesbær

These days, 13 new electric buses are being introduced into service by Almenningsvagnar Kynnisferðir and Hagvagnar, which operate bus services for Strætó bs. in the capital area. Last year, Strætó bs. concluded contracts with the companies following a tender process, and as a result, their entire bus fleets will be fully electric by the end of 2029. These new buses form part of that transition.
The buses are manufactured by the Chinese company Higer, with Icelandia acting as their local distributor. They are equipped with 482 kWh batteries and have a driving range of up to 350 km.
“We welcome the addition of these buses to the Strætó fleet. With their introduction, around 40 buses in Strætó’s operations are now electric, representing approximately 25% of the fleet. Our experience with operating electric buses has been very positive, and we see them as the future energy source for public transport,” says Jóhannes Svavar Rúnarsson, CEO of Strætó bs.
“With these buses, we at Hagvagnar are taking our first steps towards electrifying our fleet, and we are very excited about this development,” says Hjörvar Sæberg Högnason, CEO of Hagvagnar.
At the same time, Strætó bs. has installed charging stations at the depots of Almenningsvagnar Kynnisferðir and Hagvagnar to support the operation of these vehicles.
“We have had a successful partnership with Higer since 2016, and over the past two years we have been working on electrifying our fleet. It is truly exciting to be part of this energy transition in public transport in the capital area, and we will continue to move forward with the electrification of other parts of our operations. We expect to have close to 40 electric coaches in operation by the end of next year,” says Björn Ragnarsson, CEO of Icelandia and Almenningsvagnar Kynnisferðir.

Thirteen new electric buses

Additional trips will be added on Route 94 due to changes in the flight schedule over the holiday period.
On 23 December and 30 December, an extra trip will depart from Djúpivogur at 08:55 and from Höfn at 10:50.

The changed route network marks an important step towards better and more accessible public transport services in the countryside.
The goals are to better accommodate employment and school attendance, strengthen connections between regions, and improve links between the rural and urban route networks.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) own and operates the provincial buses and has been working on these changes in recent months. Strætó is responsible for providing passenger information and related services.
The new network also supports the government’s policy to transition rural public transport to zero-emission vehicles. The foundation of this change is to align the route structure with the availability and distribution of charging infrastructure across the country. For example, all buses in South Iceland will be electric, except the one driving Höfn – Vík – Höfn.
