Mobility week starts September 16th

On Monday, European Mobility Week begins, from September 16th to 22nd.
The theme of the week is Shared Public Space.

Mobility week is a European awareness-raising campaign to improve transports in cities and towns. Since, 2002 cities and towns in Iceland have participated in this concerted effort with municipalities in Europe and Strætó has been involved since beginning.

The aim of the week is to encourage people to think about their own travel habits and encourage more people to use diverse, sustainable means of travel.

Variety of events will be on schedule on the mobility week:

September 16th: Opening and Bike Exhibition
• The Bike Exhibition by Reiðhjólabændur and Reykjavík city will be opened in Tjarnarsalur at City Hall on September 16th at 16:00 and will remain open every day during Mobility Week.

September 18: Auðlindahringir (The circle of resources )
Auðlindahringir is a series of events at Elliðaárstöð where resource experts from Orkuveitan will guide participants on a cycling tour. The meeting point is at Rafstöðvarvegur at 17:00.
• Reiðhjólabændur and Bíó Paradís will show the documentary Chasing The Sun.
Aðförin í öndvegi will take place at Elliðaárstöð. Orka náttúrunnar and Veitur will host the event at noon at the Bistro by Elliðaárstöð. Soup, bread, and coffee will be served.

September 19: New walking and cycling path and a Pub Quiz
• Opening of a new walking and cycling path in Suðurhlíðar, in collaboration with Reykjavík city, the Icelandic Road Administration, and Betri Samgöngur.
• Transportation Pub Quiz at SnorraBar with Samtök um bíllausan lífsstíl (organization for a car-free lifestyle) at 11:00.

September 20: Traffic conference
• Traffic Conference – Together as a team. Samgöngustofa will hold the Traffic Conference from 9:00 to 15:30 at Gamla Bíó, Ingólfsstræti 2a in Reykjavík. The theme: Diverse Groups of Road Users.

September 21: People of Reykjavík and Seltjarnarnes cycle together
• Group Cycling. The City of Reykjavík and Seltjarnarnes are organizing a family cycling trip. Participants will meet at 11:00 at the new viewpoint by the JL House. The 6-kilometer Grótta Circle will be cycled, and participants will be invited to swim, have coffee, juice, and kleinur at the end of the trip.

September 22: Car-Free Day
• There will be free access to Strætó buses in the capital area and in the countryside during the day and everybody is encouraged to rest their cars and use diverse and eco-friendly means of transport.
• Garðsbraut Street in Húsavík will be closed to car traffic. A lecture on children’s safety in street design. Norðurþing.
