The payment system Klappið got a special recognition at the event Transport Ticketing Global this week. The event is the world’s leading and largest smart ticketing event for public transport. This year it was held at Olympia London on 7-8 March. See: <a href="https://www.transport-ticketing.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://www.transport-ticketing.com/</a>
Strætó´s new payment system was among seven nominated and got a special award – Highly Commended – in the category Best Smart Ticketing Programme for less than 200k daily journeys. The purpose is to acknowledge innovative solutions and recognises a public transport operator or public transport authority and their technology partner(s) that have launched a successful smart ticketing programme in the last 2 years.
&#8222;This recognition is particularly pleasing because the judges are the world&#8217;s leading experts in this field and more nominations have never been submitted. It shows us that we are on the right path and encourages us to continue the long journey of making the Strætó payment system a great solution for both passengers and all those who work to make public transport a good option for people on the move. After all, there are particularly exciting innovations expected &#8211; among other things, contactless payment, and capping,&#8220; says Daði Áslaugarson, Head of IT at Strætó.
Klappið was launched on November 16, 2021, and then, customers could scan their tickets with an app, a Klapp card or a paper card on board buses, as well as making it easier for passengers to purchase products, access discounts and have an overview of their use of My Pages. In terms of user privacy, the system is more secure than previous solutions and offers great potential for future development.
The staff of Strætó are grateful for the recognition and are determined to continue making Klappið best as possible for Strætó&#8217;s customers.

Klappið gets an international award

Since Strætó&#8217;s new payment system, Klappið, was put into use over a year ago, close to half a million accesses have been activated and daily scans are tens of thousands.
Activated user accesses that are open in the Klapp system today are 473,888 based on numbers from February 6, both authenticated and anonymous accesses.
Since the system was put into use, on 16 Nov. 2021, 537,429 accesses have been registered and confirmed in the system, of which 63,541 have been deleted, e.g., duplicate registrations or anonymous or authenticated accesses deleted after use.

Klapp fares are scanned successfully 33,000 times on average per day on weekdays.

On schedule 
Strætó decided to launch a new payment system with FARA, an international company that has experience in setting up similar payment systems for companies in public transport. It was clear from the beginning that the system was based on a certain foundation and needed to be adjusted to the needs of Strætó and its customers. In the beginning, certain problems needed to be addressed. The system is in constant development, as the needs of Strætó&#8217;s customers are always in priority. In the coming months we will be announcing new features and updates which is exciting. Strætó is happy to report that the project met the initial budget, but a tender was put out according to public procurement in the EEA region.
System uptime over 99.99% 
Unfortunately, the payment system has been down for some time several times and customers have not been able to use it, for example to buy tickets or scan tickets on board the buses. In the last six months (August – January), the system has gone down six times, from almost 30 minutes to two hours. The exception to this was last October 18 when customers could not buy new products, which lasted for over ten hours, it was over night which explains the long time. Despite that, the uptime is very good, or over 99.99%.
Foreign card turnover is highest during the summer 
The Klapp payment system supports the acceptance of foreign payment cards and foreign Visa and MasterCard cards can be registered if they have 3D Secure, the same applies to domestic cards. Percentage of foreign card turnover in the total card turnover in the Klapp system is highest during the summer months, but every month foreign card turnover is on average about 13% of the total card turnover in the Klapp system. It is likely that this number will increase when contactless payments are implemented, as a lot of single trips are purchased by tourists visiting Iceland.

33,000 daily scans in Klapp

February 24, a new timetable will take effect on route 29 which is a pre-order service. Times are both delayed or moved earlier to achieve a better connection with route 15 and 7. At the same time, the frequency is increased, so there are five trips a day from morning to evening instead of three from the middle of the day.
From February 24 there will also be a change to booking trips, where passengers will call the Strætó customer service at 540-2740 to book a trip.

Increased frequency and better connection on route 29

Night buses will start driving within the city of Reykjavík next weekend according to schedule.
The Reykjavík city has made a service contract with Strætó bs to start running night buses only within the city. Night buses will drive from the city center of Reykjavík according to timetable.
With this, the city is responding to a call for improved transportation in the city center on weekends, but no agreement was reached in the Strætó board to resume running the night bus. The City of Reykjavík therefore presented a proposition to the Strætó board that Strætó provide services for the city&#8217;s residents and offer a night bus that drives only in Reykjavík. Four night routes will drive from the Reykjavík city center and to various neighbourhoods in Reykjavík city; Breiðholt, Úlfarsárdalur, Norðlingaholt and Grafarvogur.

<li>Night buses will drive from Reykjavík city center on Friday- and Saturday nights</li>
<li>You can only use night buses on routes from the city center. Not towards the city center.</li>
<li>Buses do not drive according to a traditional timetable. Strætó only publishes the departure time from the city center and buses drive to their destinations as quickly as possible.</li>
<li>Customers that want to catch the night buses outside the city center are advised to follow the buses real time location in the Klapp app or on straeto.is.</li>
</ul>
Fares on night buses
A single fare on the night bus is 1100 kr. that is the same amount as double fare. Customers can buy special night tickets in the Klapp payment system, as before customers with 30 day and 1 year’s bus cards can use them on night buses. It will not be possible to pay with a payment card as you can buy a night ticket in the Klapp. You can also pay with cash.

Night buses return in Reykjavík city

The strike by drivers in oil distribution in the capital area will not affect the services of Strætó, as an exemption has been granted for the distribution of oil for both the buses of Strætó and contractors that drive for Strætó.
The bus routes within the capital area and in the countryside will therefore remain unchanged.

The service of Strætó will not be affected

Strætó´s passenger numbers continue to grow and for the second month in a row there was a record number of boardings since regular measurements began. In January 2023 there were more than 1.119.000 boardings within the Capital Area which is the highest number measured in January since regular measurements began. There were almost 7% more boardings in January this year than in January 2019 and almost 4% more than in January 2020, which was the previous January record.
Last December there were almost 980.000 boardings, which was also a December record since regular measurements began.
The number of Strætó´s passengers decreased during the Covid pandemic, but now passenger numbers are increasing again.
